Eurovision: The Overall Rankings (2019 Update)

Another year gone and another opportunity to reflect on a year of Eurovision history and heritage. As regular readers will know, I maintain two separate rankings of all nations at Eurovision. The first is a points ranking in which I give countries 2 points for a song I love and 1 for a song I like. The second is a proportional ranking which takes into account the number of times that each country has participated at the contest. With that in mind, let's have a look at this year's update starting with the state of play pre-update.

The points ranking all remains fairly the same. The biggest changes come in the shape of Cyprus who rise another point but not the two point-rise I was hoping for around 'Replay'. The only other nation who left this year's contest with a point in my world were Russia who are left alongside Cyprus. Other than that, the only points update is from Finland, coming around my updated love of Eurovision classic 'Lapponia'.

The proportional rankings see a lot of change mainly focused around the new entry of Australia into the rankings after five participations. They come in at number 5 having impressed me with their entries from Guy Sebastian and Dami Im. Their small number of participations does however leave them at risk of falling several places next year. Estonia are now in gold medal position having not done a lot to get there except waiting for Azerbaijan's ranking to finally catch up with the number of years they have been participating. Ukraine rise a couple of places following my recent re-exploration of early Ukrainian entries and specifically the legend that is Ani Lorak. Russia's point this year is enough to take them above the United Kingdom. Bulgaria's non-participation this year keeps them in the top 10 and if the current financial issues at BNT drag on, could see them stay in that position for a bit. Sweden are up 1 having claimed a point this year with my addition of 'Undo' to my larger Eurovision playlist (though this is more my love of MelFest coming through than my appreciation for what Sanna managed in Copenhagen). The Cypriots move up a couple of places following their points boost. By contrast, Baltic nations Latvia and Lithuania took significant hits owing mainly to their lack of long-term history. The Fins are the other big winners of the year for reasons already made clear.

So those are my overall Eurovision rankings, but what are yours? Who is for you the best Eurovision nation of all time? Do you have a similarly nerdy graph? Anyway, I want to hear all about how you use stats with your Eurovision history in the comments below. Don't forget to share and subscribe to the blog for more content coming over the course of the summer. I will leave you with my big 200+ song Eurovision playlist for you to mull over as we go into another wonderful summer of nice weather, Eurobeats and taking stock ahead of our road to the Netherlands next year!
